E-Health Applications in Ophthalmic Diseases: Ongoing Developments
نویسندگان
چکیده
During the next few years, health systems in developed societies, especially in Japan and Europe, will face increased aging of the population and increased demands on health care systems. This situation, combined with decreasing numbers of health care professionals in our area, could seriously compromise the quality of current health care (Basu, 2008). However, diagnostic and therapeutic tools in most specialties are becoming increasingly more dependent on highly sophisticated technologic advances. Even though e-ophthalmology cannot be substituted for direct patient-doctor relations in the management and follow-up of some conditions, in many cases, it is highly reliable to put eHealth systems in place based on advanced medical devices and information and communications technology ABSTRACT

متن کاملPET vs. SPECT: in the context of ongoing developments
This paper intends to compare the abilities of the two major imaging modalities in nuclear medicine imaging: Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT). The motivations are many-fold: (i) To gain a better understanding of the strengths and limitations of the two imaging modalities in the context of recent and ongoing developments in hardware ...
متن کاملClinical Applications of Optical Coherence Tomography in Ophthalmology
Assessment of the peripapillary nerve fiber layer and macular thickness can be determined in ophthalmology using optical coherence tomography (OCT). Decreased nerve fiber layer thickness and macular ganglion cell thickness in optic nerve ischemia have been correlated with visual field loss. OCT allows deep optic nerve head evaluation which helps understand pathophysiology of diseases. Furtherm...
متن کاملAn Overview of Technological Developments in Medical Applications of X-Rays and Radioactivity
The years 1895 to 1898 were momentous for their impact on health and human well beings. First, Wilhelm Roentgen noted a glowing fluorescent screen, caused by invisible rays. This event subsequently led to the discovery of X-rays in 1895, and thus the birth of the “atomic ageâ€. Next Becquerel’s investigations of these mysterious rays led to his experiments with uranium salt crystals. He th...
متن کاملDiabetic Retinopathy-Update on Prevention Techniques, Present Therapies, and New Leads.
Diabetic retinopathy is the major ocular complication associated with diabetes, and represents the leading cause of legal blindness in the working-age population of developed countries. Although classically diagnosed based on abnormalities of the retinal microvasculature, diabetic retinopathy is now widely recognized as a neurovascular disease. While all patients with diabetes are at increased ...
